TECHNOLOGY IN BIOSECURITY
Autonomous surveillance technologies, such as sensor networks and robotics systems, linked to intelligent algorithms, have the potential to prevent, detect and manage biosecurity threats.
THREE TYPES OF BIOSECURITY
The Three Levels of Biosecurity: 1.conceptual
2.structural
3.procedural
TECHNIQUES OF BIOSECURITY
Limit shared vehicles, machines, and equipment. Clean and disinfect all shared equipment before entering your property.
Ensure vehicles entering your farm (including feed, milk truck, animal movement, maintenance, and deliveries) follow a developed entry protocol that may include cleaning and disinfection.
5 PILLARS OF BIOSECURITY
A biosecurity program rests upon five pillars:
1.Inventory process
2.physical security
3.A personal relatability program
4.Transport program
5.Information security processes
Biosecurity is a holistic term that includes policies and regulations to protect humans, food, agriculture, and the environment from potential biological threats intended to harm innovations, standards, and practices that are utilized to secure pathogens, poisons, and delicate advancements from unapproved access, abuse.
STEPS FOR BIOSECURITY
The basics of biosecurity include:
- Controlling access to animals and farms.
- Protective wear.
- Sanitation.
- Disinfection.
- Isolation on introduction.
- Testing.
- Vaccination.
THE FUTURE OF BIOSECURITY
To help us continue to protect our unique natural habitats, the health of our people and build stronger, sustainable primary industries, we need to look forward at new technologies and systems to support us in our efforts.
Technological developments will play a key role in helping us to not only protect what we love, but also improve our current practices. This includes smarter, more efficient and sustainable ways to:
- 1.conduct pest, weed and disease surveillance and monitoring
- 2.capture data and analytics
- 3.tackle invasive pests and diseases
- 4.undertake R&D and apply scientific and genetic research
- 5.track our food from paddock to plate (traceability)
- 6.communicate and report.
BIOSECURITY INNOVATION
Innovation - from research to reality
There are many examples in our work where research projects and innovation initiatives
interconnect and help to provide an end-to-end solution to key challenges the department is
facing. One example is biofouling management.
Biofouling is one of the major pathways for translocation of marine pests.
The department is currently developing new biofouling requirements to
better manage this biosecurity risk.
Our team have been working with the Marine Biosecurity Unit on several
projects to help us work more efficiently and effectively in this space.
From world-class research with CEBRA to piloting remotely operated
vehicles, it's an exciting journey to be a part of.
